This year, the pageant is produced by Uzuri International, the new franchise holder of the Miss Universe Organization in Jamaica. It was originally scheduled for July at Emancipation Park in St Andrew., but was cancelled in the last minutes due to lack of sponsorship and other professional obligations. The franchise holder, Dimitris Kosvogiannis, also relinquished the franchise of the pageant.
According to Karl Williams from Uzuri International, this year’s pageant will be scaling down due to time restraint and lack of sponsors. The new Miss Universe Jamaica 2013 must be in Russia by October 23 for the competition.
“We were planning on having just about 10 contestants, but right now that number has risen to about 15, as some of the girls have told their friends about the contest. However, we want to take it down to about 10 girls for the show,” he was quoted by the Jamaica Observer online Newspaper.
Yendi Phillipps is the most successful Jamaica’s representative in Miss Universe competition. She took the first runner-up spot behind Mexico in Las Vegas in 2010. The country has never won the Miss Universe crown.
