Nicole Kelly, Miss Metro, was crowned Miss Iowa 2013 at the end of the state’s pageant held at the Adler Theater in Davenport on Saturday, June 8, 2013. She will represent the state of Iowa at the upcoming Miss America 2014 pageant in Atlantic this September.

23-year-old Nicole is truly an example of “Overcoming Disabilities”, her pageant platform. According to her website, Nicole was born without left forearm. “Although, when people ask me what happened to my arm I like to ask, ‘Well, what do you think happened?’ My favorite explanation to date has been that it was bitten off by a shark – a perfect explanation for someone from Iowa,” she wrote.
She will compete at Miss America 2014 pageant at Atlantic City this September.
“As I grew up I learned to counterbalance the initial stares I received from people with an outgoing personality that would not give into “no.” This means that I tried everything. From baseball, to dance, to diving – there is nothing I would not try. I found my passion within a world where I was giving people permission to stare: the stage.”
Kelly plans to promote the Shriners Organization during her reign.
“Having been born with only half of my left arm,” she wrote, “I have gone through several prosthetic limbs provided solely by the care and services of the Shriners Organization, a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. While often known for their funny hats and mini-car parade stints, the Shriners are most notably known for funding summer circuses to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children.”
For talent, Nicole performed “Defying Gravity”.
