avannah’s Platform: Epilepsy is diagnosed in over 60,000 Minnesotans; and every 4 minutes someone in the world is diagnosed with epilepsy. Epilepsy is an electrical storm in the brain, a seizure disorder that occurs when permanent changes in brain tissue cause the brain to be too excited or jumpy. The brain sends out abnormal signals which result in repeated, unpredictable seizures. This usually begins between ages 5 and 20, but it can happen at any age. Epilepsy is diagnosed in over 50 million people worldwide and is rarely talked about. For many, it is an uncomfortable issue to openly discuss. People with epilepsy need many advocates to work first hand on educating communities about epilepsy.
